The Animal Park Response to DCM
Here at the Animal Park Marketplace, your pet’s health is our number one priority. With that in mind, we want to discuss the current issue at hand, DCM and Grain-free dog foods. The FDA recently released a report with a list of dog foods that have a “higher risk” of your pet developing DCM (a very serious heart condition). This study took 544 dogs who already had the disease and examined what food they were eating. As of right now the FDA has no scientific evidence linking any diet to an increased risk of DCM.
Dr. Bruce Kornreich- a veterinary cardiologist in the department of clinical sciences at the Veterinary College of Cornell University states, “What we don’t know is if [the foods] used in these diets in place of grains are causing the problem”.
The scientific evidence we do have on DCM shows that it comes from a lack of Taurine. Taurine is for cardiovascular health and comes from the muscle meat of an animal. It has nothing to do with grains, any more than it has to do with peas and potatoes. So long as the food that you feed (whether grain-free or not) has a good amount of protein, and a substantial amount of that protein from meat, your dog should be getting enough Taurine from their food.
With that being said, we have personally spoken with our brand representatives to ensure that the food we sell in our store not only has a good amount of naturally sourced taurine, but an added amount as well to ensure your pets safety.
This is not an issue we take lightly, and we are watching it very closely for any signs of scientific evidence. We want what is best for your furry family, the same as you.
If you are still concerned, please feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.
If you would like to feed a grain-in diet, we do also offer a selection of quality foods that include grain.
Your pet’s safety and your peace of mind are our highest priority at all times.
Sincerely,
The Animal Park Marketplace
